Concrete is one of the most common and preferred materials for making driveways. It is because of its durability and resilience that concrete is often chosen as a driveway surfacing material. Things to consider before resurfacing

Most homeowners would not want to go for a driveway replacement as it is too expensive. When you opt for driveway resurfacing in Western Sydney here are a few things you must consider:

Cracking: If your concrete driveway has cracks that means that the surfacing is falling apart and needs immediate attention. If the cracks are less than a quarter-inch in width, then you can just do with repairing it. But if the cracks are more than a quarter-inch wide, that means there has been significant damage and water has seeped in. In such cases, patchwork may not work. If you live in an area where it is extremely cold with freezing temperatures, then resurfacing the entire driveway is the best option to prevent future damage.

Existing material: Another factor to keep in mind before resurfacing or repairing a driveway is what kind of material it is made with. Some surfaces are easier to repair. Concrete driveways may require resurfacing and resealing while cobblestone driveways can be repaired by replacing the damaged stones. You must also keep in mind the aesthetics of your driveway while resurfacing or repairing it.

Drainage issues: A new driveway will not be affected by rainwater. However, with years of usage, if you see rainwater pooling in some areas or in the middle of the driveway, it means that there are drainage issues that need your attention. Resurfacing and resealing the driveway is the best option to deal with such issues.

Steps of resurfacing a driveway

Here are the steps of resurfacing:

  • Clean your driveway and do the patchwork: Preparing the old concrete surface for renewal is very important. First remove all the dirt, oil, and flaking concrete pieces. Once the cleaning is done, check the big cracks and seal them with a patching compound.
  • Mix the concrete resurfacer to a syrup consistency: Mix the concrete resurfacer with water to a thick consistency, almost that of the syrup. It is advised to use a power drill or mixing paddle to do it as mixing with a hand can leave lumps behind. You might need an extra pair of hands to o the mixing.
  • Spread the concrete resurfacer in small sections of the driveway: While applying the resurfacer you need to work quickly as the syrup in hot weather may dry up fast and get hardened, hence mixing it with cold water is always advisable.  Once the resurfacer is ready, apply it on the driveway and even it out with the help of a squeegee. Let the smooth new surface settle for five minutes. Apply in small sections so that you can do it with more precision.
  • Let it dry for at least six hours: In most cases, the resurfaced driveway is ready for foot traffic within six hours. Within 24 hours you can drive your car on the new driveways. However, this time may be shorter if you are living in a hot climate.

These are some of the basic points to keep in mind while resurfacing your driveway.
